Matt -- I think it's safe to say that most people know their shopping habits are being tracked, especially if they use any kind of loyalty discount card. It's just a fact of life. I'm very curious what your "sticky notes central" look like! I'm a fan of the Super Sticky ones in neon colors. :)

Hi Barry! I agree. A lot of big brands spend too much money only to look good. In this case, Gatorade got a nice write-up on Mashable and lots of tweets, although it's not about their product.

I'd love to hear your recommendations of a good daily work routine. Are you doing a class soon?

Right, BMW. Nor is it centralized.
It seems like a great in house video--but kinda creepy in the way an actor looks in the camera, at the audience, in a longing sort of way. I don't think consumers really want to think about Gatorade, watching them, learning from them and how to better market to them. Maybe it's all cool now that the cat is out of the bag...

My social media center is littered with green and purple post it notes. I can barely see through them all.

Can I throw a stone? ;)

I think Gatorade was led astray by a design firm... while a pretty setup is nice, the core value in a media monitoring system is around two things: usability and education.

I mean really... if Gatorade was really that focused on social media... wouldn't they have a non-flash site that supports a few million mobile users on iPhone/iPad?

I'm guessing they spent way too much money on a pretty looking tool that isn't fully understood.

The real cost of that setup is fairly small:

$2000 - one decent desktop
$1500 - six $250 monitors
$500 - an iPad (for mobility)

Add on a few FREE web tools and a daily work routine... a "bingo" you have a command center.

Looking at this setup doesn't make me envious, it simply makes me wonder who paid for it all?

Oh BMW, what would my life be like without you? Certainly much duller! :) Great call on the less-than-ideal connotation of the term "command center" when discussing social media, and you're right, we should all know that by now. Thank you! Hey, how was your Gatorade?

I know we spend a lot of time debating often trivial vernacular on this Social Media show of ours.... but ya' know, "command center" seems to imply we're controlling something. What exactly does a "command center" ...bear with me... "command"? NASA has a command center. They control rockets.

If we've learned anything about social media in the past few years, it's that it doesn't really like to be commanded. Call it a "monitoring" center and I'm sweating with envy like them athletes V-Soph mentions.

Speaking of, I'm gonna go take command of some Gatorade about now...

Nick - Wow, you have a pretty nice setup there! I'm jealous. ;) Seriously though, I have to agree. It's about using the right tools to track progress and evaluate performance. But doesn't "social media command center" sounds badass? Hee hee.

I have a command center for tracking social media uptake and responses, it includes a few laptops, large LCD, and a smaller LCD, a few visualization tools and some web apps... and I don't really even do social media outside of being a part of digital strategy. Instead I use it to track site and product launches.. is that social media? I call it Web Analytics... it just happens to include social media spaces in the data now.

Design and development of the Pepsico/Gatorade Mission Control project was done in our SLC studio. Fantastic project. Great thinking. Smart brands. We're proud to have played a role in it all. Thanks for the coverage!
